Critical Literacy

- critical literacy is when you apply critical thinking to a literacy topic.

Bias- What you favour more
Source- Where you get the information from (bibliography)
Credible- Someone that can be believed
Authority- Somebody who has power
Reliable- Trustworthy
Perspective- How you or someone sees something
Agenda- your intentions/ what you want to get done
Manipulate- To convince someone of something or to persuade them


Critical Literacy questions

1. In whose interest is in the text?
2. Who is allowed to speak? Who is quoted?
3. What kind of language is used in the text?
4. Whose views are excluded or privileged in the text?




Men and Women had very different rolls in the 70's, for example the women did all the cleaning and cooking while the men did the outside jobs like mowing the lawns.

Is this text fair?
-  No because It makes it look like only young maori/PI men drink.

How are children, teenagers or young adults constructed in this text?
- Irresponsible with their drinking and driving
- Young people like to party and drink
- Like loud music
- Don't sound intelligent all the time 

How does the text present age, gender or cultural groups?
- Women are being shown in the background
- mostly maori and pi

Why is the text written this way?
- To scare and shock you
